Mobile mechanical test lane takes services closer to end users
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Mobile Test Lane has winded up its vehicle inspection in parts of the Western and Southern provinces, where it was stationed since January this year.
According to Senior Supt. Bernardin Nsengiyumva, who is in charge of the mobile lane, they trekked the districts of Rubavu, Karongi, Rusizi, Nyamagabe and Huye in the last five months.
“Today (May 24), we will wind up the tour in the six districts. For the last six days, we were stationed in Karongi where we conducted 84 inspections,” said SSP Nsengiyumva.
The mobile test Lane supports other mechanical inspection centres to serve car owners residing far in the countryside, who previously braved long distances to Kigali to have their vehicles inspected.
“The turn up wasn’t that big but we will go through the same districts starting July and we call upon all those who will be due for inspect to turn up when we resume and ensure that their automobiles are roadworthy,” he added.
The Mobile Test Lane has the capacity to inspect up to 100 vehicles per day.
“These districts have many business vehicles and as you know, they are inspected every after six months, and driving to Kigali becomes a bit costly, and that’s why we opted to take there the mobile mechanical inspection services,” he noted.
Rwanda National Police started its vehicle inspection services in 2008 when the first two lanes were established at Remera MIC with the capacity to inspect only 150 vehicles per day.
Currently, with the establishment of the third lane at Remera MIC, Mobile Test Lane and building another lane at Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District to serve the Eastern Province, the inspections increased to at least 800 vehicles daily.
The improved services also saw the number of inspections annually increasing tremendously.
The number of vehicle inspections last year, for example, increased by about 27 percent to 96, 283, up from 75, 839 inspections in 2014.
In this year’s first two months alone, a total of 17094 vehicles were inspected, according to statistics from the centre.
Currently, RNP is constructing other two lanes at MIC Remera, which are set to be operational by the end of this May, which will see daily inspections at Remera alone centre increasing to 700.
